1. 2022 CMASA Academic Summit and Call for Papers

CMASA is pleased to announce its call for papers for the 8th CMASA Chinese Medicine Academic Summit which will be held virtually online on Sunday, 27 November 2022.

The Summit aims to promote the Chinese Medicine classics and to pass on Chinese medicine classical literature from generation to generation.

The Summit is led by the CMASA Academic Department, both offline and online simultaneously, with most attendees from Australia and some overseas. The Summit will summarise and demonstrate the academic progress in various aspects in the past year. Through the Summit, the experiences of the older generation will be passed onto the next generation. It will also highlight the application of the guiding principles described in classical literature to be closely integrated in the clinical practice.

3. NSW Course Announcement: Passing on the Classics to the Next Generation

With members following and in anticipation, the NSW “Miraculous Pivot (Lingshu)” course is to be held on 19 September 2022. This is the 5^th Lecture in the Fourth Lecture Series.

As the saying goes, “If you don not accumulate small steps, you cannot reach thousands of miles; if you do not accumulate small streams, you cannot become a river or a sea”. After a year of persistence, I believe that many members have seen the difference the lectures have made, and the clinical practice must have seen a great improvement too.

This course will focus more on clinical application and will pave the way for further learning of classics! If there is no solid foundation to find solutions, no matter how wonderful the classics illustration, it will still be sitting on the shelves collecting dust. No matter how wonderful the acupoints are, it is still difficult to decipher the mystery!

This foundation refers to the physiological and anatomical knowledge under acupoints. At the same time this is also the pathological source of various complex diseases. In other words, without understanding the anatomy, physiological or pathological basis, it is difficult to understand why a disease in the upper body can be treated by needling on the lower body; why several needling techniques can be applied to the same acupoint; why transition between the reinforcing and reducing technique yields a different treatment outcome. Without the foundation of the classics, one will not really understand the true meaning why the ancients define these special acupoints!

The fourth series of the classics learning course continued to be delivered by Prof Guoqing Wei whom you are now quite familiar with. Based on his decades of efforts and research, Prof Wei has built into familiar acupoints with western medicine’s physiological and pathological knowledge which does not deviate from the Chinese Medicine knowledge base. In this unique way, Prof Wei has been leading us to unlock the secretes behind acupoints, review and consolidate the learning from previous lectures.

These well-connected lectures will become the cornerstone of accurate clinical dialectical guiding ideology! Such an opportunity is really a blessing for our members, and it is also the best learning opportunity that should not be missed!

The “Miraculous Pivot (Lingshu)” course is an appropriate approach designed for the CMASA members who practise acupuncture and Tuina. The purpose is to:

• Establish the Chinese Medicine thinking,
• Improve clinical skills to solve clinical problems,
• Improve Chinese Medicine academic skills,
• Promote the quality and safety of clinical practice,
• Further develop Chinese Medicine, and

Through the active participation of most CMASA members, classics learning has become popular. The interaction with lecturers has also built up the members’ confidence and enthusiasm for the profession. We firmly believe that the road to learning classics will grow wider and wider in the teaching and learning. Your trust and support are greatly appreciated.

Thanks to the CMASA academic leaders who have carefully built this platform for members with an intention to lead everyone to enter the gate of Chinese medicine classics as soon as possible, embarking on a genuine journey of Chinese Medicine.

These courses put emphasis on the quality and the outcome of learning, without speeding to catch up with the progress. Theory and clinical practice are closely integrated to ensure that the participants will not only learn the practical hands-on needling skills, techniques and other aspects of one move and one style, but also thoroughly understand the classical theory and use it as a guiding ideology.

This lecture will provide a live demonstration: tentatively the 5th lesson will provide an observation opportunity of live virtual demonstration via Zoom. One or two participants who have registered for the on-site demonstration can choose to go to the scene to participate in the needling application or to experience the needling feeling. Please contact the CMASA event organiser, the place to be offered by the order of registration! You can also shoot some short videos in a timely manner for everyone to review and explore, so as to directly sublimate the classic theoretical knowledge and rational understanding taught by the teacher into a perceptual understanding that can be used, and truly learn from the teacher’s decades of rich clinical experience!

4.  2022 Annual General Meeting and Election of the Victoria Branch

According to the Charter of the CMASA Victorian Branch, it is time for a new term of the Committee members. The current Committee decided to hold the 2022 election on Sunday afternoon, 25 September 2022. To assist with the process, the Committee has established a “Election Preparation Working Group”.

The elections will be held in a democratic, fair and transparent manner in accordance with the CMASA Charter. The new Committee will serve for a three-year term. The next committee afterwards will be elected every two years, in order to concord with the election year of the whole CMASA election.

The current Committee hereby extends a formal invitation to all members who are interested in being elected as a committee member. Candidates will need to meet the requirements listed below to actively participate in the election.

Eligibility to be elected as a committee member:

• Being a Chinese medicine practitioner, or an acupuncturist, or a herbalist,
• Holding a current valid registration with the Chinese Medicine Board of Australia,
• Being an active practitioner in the current calendar year,
• Have been a formal CMASA member for three years or above, and
• Voluntary enrolment in the election for candidacy

Candidates are requested to email their personal information, including a resume and campaign summary, to the CMASA Victoria Branch’s email address: cmasavic2019@gmail.com. Candidate profiles need to be concise within the 300 word limit.

The expression of interest closes on 12 September 2022. We encourage members who are interested to actively participate in this event and to register the interest to be elected as a committee member, with an intention to contribute to building a brighter future for CMASA.

5. Victorian “Great Doctors’ Forum”: Policy, Regulations and Safety Practice

Time and date: 1:30pm-5:30pm, Sunday, 4 September 2022

Speaker 1: Dr. Jerry Zhang

Theme: Policies and Regulations, Practice Matters, Medical Safety

Dr Zhang graduated with a Bachelor of Traditional Chinee Medicine from Beijing University of Chinese Medicine in 1982.  Dr Zhang also held a PhD from Beijing Medical University in 1987, then he became an associate professor at the same university. Dr Zhang won a first prize and a second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Dr Zhang published more than 40 academic papers in different countries, i.e. China, the United Kingdom, Germany, the United States and Australia. In 1994, Dr Zhang taught Chinese Medicine at RMIT University in Australia. He is now a Chinese medicine practitioner, specialising in Chinese medicine internal medicine, immunology, dermatology, preventive medicine, oncology and geriatrics. Dr Zhang was a member of the Chinese Medicine Board of Australia for three terms. He is currently a member of the Chinese Medicine Accreditation Committee in the Australian Health Practitioner Authority (AHPRA).

Speaker 2: Dr. Junzeng Xin

Theme: Reflections on Chinese Medicine lobbying prior to the 2022 Australian Commonwealth election

Dr Junzeng Xin will provide an in-depth analysis of the impact of various parties in Australia on the policies of the Chinese medicine profession as well as the importance of further improving the laws and regulations of the Australian Chinese medicine industry and protecting the safety of the public. Dr Xin will focus his analysis on the following:

• The Australian Government,
• Parliamentary members
• Chinese Medicine Board of Australia (AHPRA)
• Chinese medicine professional associations
• Western medicine professional association/s
• Pharmaceutical corporations
• Chinese medicine practitioners

Dr Xin graduated from Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine with a Bachelor’s degree in 1996 and a Master’s degree in acupuncture in 1999. Dr Xin was as a Senior Lecturer at the School of Acupuncture and Massage at Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Dr Xin was the President of Chinese Medicine of Australia (CMA) Inc.

Please note that AHPRA as well as all insurance companies require mandatory ongoing education on policies, regulations and Chinese medicine clinical practice, for each registered Chinese medicine acupuncturist each year. Please do not miss this lecture and remember to register in time.

6. The 6^th CMASA Advanced First Aid Certificate Course (NSW)

Please note that there is only a limited number of places availabe in the 6th CMASA Advanced First Aid Certificate Course in NSW. Please register in this course, especially for those members whose first aid certification will expire during September to December this year, noting there will be no further courses available if there is not sufficient demand for it this year.

Specific training requirements:

• Homework and related training materials or content will be emailed to the trainees upon receiving the evidence of your
• When you attend the training, please bring: 1) a pen and your completed homework; and 2) the original copies of the 100-point ID documents to be photocopied for record

Other matters:

• The Advanced First Aid Certificate Course (HLTAID011) is delivered in Mandarin (standard Chinese).
• This certificate is accepted by the Australian Government, valid for 3 years. The certificate will be available on the same day.
• This certificate is an important credential for engaging in practising massage, acupuncture or other healthcare work, as well as getting private insurance rebates.

A reminder that during the Covid-19 pandemic, it is important to note:
